Since the popularization of remote working, millions have been flocking to digital nomadism, and for good reason - with a reliable internet connection, it’s now possible to live and earn from anywhere. If you’re considering making the switch, here are a few tips to help you find work and transition as cheaply and smoothly as possible.

Possible Jobs

Your first priority is to identify which types of work are available to you as a digital nomad. Many people in this lifestyle work as freelancers, consultants, or entrepreneurs. Popular fields include content creation, web development, graphic design, and digital marketing. However, with advancements in technology, the list of possible jobs is growing.

Education

If there’s an area of work you’d like to move into that you don’t feel you’re currently qualified for, it may be worth returning to education to improve your skills. An online business degree, for example, can fit around your regular routine thanks to remote learning - this may help you to pick up skills in accounting, business, communications, or management, all skills that can help you to thrive as a digital nomad.

Accommodation

Finding tech-friendly rentals or accommodation is another key step in becoming a digital nomad. Websites like Airbnb and Booking.com often have a wide range of listings for homes and apartments that are equipped with high-speed internet and other amenities that are important for remote work. If you have the money, know-how, and a driving license, it may also be possible to convert an RV for traveling, working, and living purposes.

Budgeting

It can be difficult to estimate the costs of a nomadic lifestyle, but it’s important to set out a rough budget and plans on how you’re going to save and manage finances whilst on the move. This might involve staying in one place for longer periods of time rather than constantly moving around or using apps like Hopper, Skyscanner, and Kayak to find the best deals on flights, hotels, and car rentals.

Preparation

You’ve laid out plans for work, accommodation, and budget, you have a first location in mind, and you’re feeling confident about your choices. The next step, then, is to pack all the right tools and equipment you need to make things work.

  • Laptops or tablets: These devices are essential for working remotely and can be used to access documents, communicate with clients, and manage projects.

  • Chargers: Take travel adapters, power banks, and traditional plugs. These devices are essential for keeping your devices charged while on the go.

  • VPN: This software allows you to securely access your company's network while working remotely.

  • Passport, IDs, and documentation: When you’re living on the move, it’s crucial to have the right documentation in case of emergencies.

  • Travel insurance: Even though you’re working and living, digital nomadism is still traveling, and insurance may be a good investment to protect yourself and your assets.

  • Medication & first aid: If you want to protect yourself against bacteria, illness, injury, or other calamities, it pays to have ample supplies of medicine and medical essentials. You may also want to brush up on your rudimentary first-aid knowledge.

…and you can check online guides for other suggestions.

Closing Thoughts

Life as a digital nomad can be a rewarding and exciting experience, but it's important to prepare yourself logistically and emotionally if you want to make a success of it. Start by laying clear plans for work, accommodation, and budget, and you'll soon be on your way to a successful and fulfilling nomadic experience.
